Post Oak Removal on Eagle Mountain Lake

We were called to Shoreline Sanctuary, a rental lakefront property in Azle on Eagle Mountain Lake, to remove a declining Post Oak near the home. Before the project, we explained signs of Hypoxylon canker and discussed some of the underlying stressors that can contribute to this decline in Post Oaks. Start to finish this project took one full day, we also talked with the homeowner about conditions that could affect the surrounding trees and ways to help reduce future stress. With the tree standing near the home and Eagle Mountain Lake just beyond it, this was definitely a tree removal with a view.

Why Hypoxylon Canker can make a declining Post Oak a concern

This declining Post Oak in Azle, TX showed signs of Hypoxylon canker, a condition commonly associated with severely stressed oak trees in North Texas. As decline progresses, affected trees can develop increasingly dry and brittle wood, making limbs and sections of the tree more prone to breaking. With this Post Oak standing so close to the Shoreline Sanctuary home, its condition and proximity to the structure made controlled removal especially important.

Controlled Rigging for the Brittle Post Oak

Before removal of the larger wood, we carefully removed the upper canopy using ropes, pulleys, and a friction device to control each section as it came down. Because advanced decline associated with Hypoxylon canker can leave Post Oak wood dry and brittle, minimizing shock and uncontrolled movement was especially important. Rigging allowed us to lower pieces individually and keep the removal controlled around the home and surrounding property.

Protecting the Property During the Final Drop

Once the Post Oak was reduced to a safe height, we installed a pull rope that was tensioned and pulled with a machine to help direct the remaining trunk into the planned drop zone and away from the nearby tree. Before making the final cut, we laid several logs across the landing area to help absorb and distribute the impact of the falling trunk. This reduced concentrated force on the lawn and provided additional protection for underground systems such as irrigation lines. Careful tree removal isn't just about getting the tree on the ground—it's also about protecting everything around it.

Using Equipment Smarter While Protecting the Property

A mini skid steer helped us move and load the heavy Post Oak logs into our trailer while reducing the physical strain on the crew. Using the right equipment can limit fatigue and allow the team to stay focused on making safer, smarter decisions throughout a tree removal. Equipment also has to be operated with the property in mind. We used wide, controlled turns to minimize disturbance to the lawn and placed protective mats over the backyard sidewalk before crossing it to help distribute the machine's weight and reduce the risk of cracking the concrete.

Stump Grinding and Preparing the Area for Restoration

After the Post Oak was removed, we ground the remaining stump below grade and removed excess stump grindings rather than leaving a large mound behind. The remaining material was leveled to better match the surrounding landscape, creating a cleaner appearance and reducing the amount of material the homeowner will need to deal with later. As the area settles and compacts naturally with rainfall, topsoil can be added to restore the area, followed by sod or grass seed to blend the area back into the lawn.

Tree Removal With a View of Eagle Mountain Lake

Not every tree removal comes with a view like this. From the top of the Post Oak, I had an incredible look across Eagle Mountain Lake and Shoreline Sanctuary before completing the removal. From carefully rigging the brittle upper sections to protecting the lawn, nearby trees, sidewalks, and surrounding property, this project was a great example of how planning goes into every stage of a tree removal. We certainly didn't mind taking a few moments to appreciate the scenery along the way.
